Word Order Inter 1

Verb + object

The verb and the object  of the verb normally go together. We do not usually put other words between them.

  • Note: the object in a sentence: the entity that is acted upon by the subject. In other words, the object is the one that receives the action of the verb.

    VERB + OBJECT

I    like           dogs    very much. (not I like very much dogs)

  • Did you see Noe yesterday?
  • Andrew often plays tennis.
  • Do you clean the office every day? (not Do you clean every weekend the office?)
  • At the end of the street you'll see a coffee shop on your right.

PLACE AND TIME

The place (where?) usually goes before the time (when? / how often? / how long?)

                            PLACE         TIME

Susan walks to work            every morning.

  • My brother has been in Germany since April.
  • We arrived at the airport early.
  • I'm going home on Monday.
  • Why weren't you at home last night?

It is often possible to put the time at the beginning of the sentence:

  • On Monday I'm going to have an exam.
  • Every morning Jenny walks to work.
