There is and There are

1. Explanation:

We use there is for singular and there are for plural.

EXAMPLES:

  • There is one board in the classroom.
  • There are three windows in the classroom.
  • There is a spider in the garden.
  • There are many people at the supermarket.

2. Contraction:

  • There's a good movie on the cinema.
  • There's only one apple left in the fridge.

You cannot contract there are.

  • There are only 2 days until my birthday.

3. Negative forms:

  • There's not = There isn't
  • There are not = There aren't
You can use both options

4. Questions:

To form a question we place is / are in front of there.

For example:

  • Are there any trees in the park? - Yes, there are.
  • Is there a salesperson in the shop? - Yes, there is.
